Background:

Opened in 1938 as a girls' grammar; became a middle school in 1973 and a junior school in 1996; set in seven acres, which include two hard tennis courts, sports pavilion, playgrounds, netball courts, playing fields, environmental study areas, and pergolas and gazebos for summer shade; accommodation extensively refurbished and extended since 2000 and now includes five libraries, a music room, drama/dance studio, five practical areas, a professional development centre, a purpose-built computer suite, assembly hall and separate gymnasium with changing facilities. Over-subscribed, with 1.1 applications per place. A 150-port whole-school computer network gives classrooms, libraries, group rooms and offices full access to the internet. More than 100 children receive instrumental tuition and the school has an orchestra and choir; competitive sports are encouraged, with more than 200 games played annually in rugby, football, cricket, tennis, hockey, rounders, netball and swimming. Parents and wider community positively encouraged to take an active part in life of school. The school runs a Bright Futures training programme for teachers, teaching assistants and governors; it is also a City and Guilds centre for NVQ training. After-school care until 6pm.
