Background:

Established in the early 1970s, Tomlinscote occupies an 'extensive and pleasantly-wooded site' in a leafy suburb just outside Frimley. The school boasts 'first-class' specialist accommodation, particularly in science, technology and information technology for which new laboratories opened in 1994. A block providing extra classrooms, art studios, sixth-form common room and study suite opened in the same year and a further building with additional science and technology facilities and upgraded English accommodation is due for completion in 2002. The school offers a learning resources centre, drama and music studios and dual-use sports centre with all-weather tennis courts, sports hall, swimming pool and dyslexic unit. It was designated a specialist language college in 1996 and teaches French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Japanese. All lower-school pupils study two foreign languages and Latin is offered to pupils from Year 9. Great store is placed upon students becoming 'international citizens' and this is reflected in the ethos of the college, across the curriculum, and in the numerous opportunities for students to go abroad and explore electronic links overseas. The school is 'active and successful' in sport, notably soccer, rugby and orienteering. It organises work-experience placements in Germany, Spain and France for sixth-formers, and there are work-experience placements for all Year 11 students. Sixth-formers participate in community service. There are also residential field study visits for art, biology, geography and geology. The school achieved the Schools Curriculum Award in 1992, and won the Young Enterprise area and regional finals in 1994. 'Academic rigour and achievement is particularly cherished, and respect for others is both cultivated and nurtured.' It is over-subscribed, with 1.3 applications per place.
