Background:
Originally opened as a middle school in 1978, Northmead became a grant maintained junior in 1993, and a foundation school in 1999. It was fully refurbished in 1998 when a new wing with five classrooms, ICT suite and dance/drama studio was built. The school'sits in tree-lined grounds within the residential area of Stoughton in North Guildford, a socially mixed locality of private and low-cost housing. In addition to above-average SATs results, the school offers 'outstanding' specialist pottery and design technology. Sport and music are 'great strengths' and feature strongly as extra-curricular activities. The school also has strong links with Emmanuel Church which runs 'OASIS' after-school care as a service to the community. The 25% of children with special educational needs are catered for in class and in some cases specific learning groups in literacy and maths. The school has a 15-place learning and language unit catering for children with specific language and literacy needs.
