Background:

Echelford School has played an important role in Ashford's community since 1933, when it was opened in Knapp Road. This is where Clarendon Primary school is now sited. 1973 saw a change-over in various schools in the area. The old Clarendon Road Infants School was closed and demolished and Cardinal Godrey Secondary School moved to a new site in Sunbury. Surrey County Council managed to persuade parents of children at Echelford School that the facilities at Cardinal Godfrey were of such excellence that the inconvenience of travelling from central Ashford would be worthwile and so the junior school became a middle school on the new site. In 1993, as part of the County's re-organisation programme, areas of the school were re-furbished and adapted. Infants were admitted and the school became an all-through primary. Echelford has over a long period maintained a high reputation within the community for its academic standards and sporting achievements and for its orchestral, choral and dramatic excellence. The governors' policy of promoting community use enables a range of adult and youth organisations to make use of the schools 'superb' facilities during the evenings and at weekends. The children are encouraged to be thoughtful towards others and to become caring members of the community, this is demonstrated through the support of local and national charities.
