Background:
Esher CofE Aided Primary School was founded on Esher Green in 1859, with King Leopold of the Belgians a major fund contributor. Queen Victoria also became a royal patron. The school later moved to its current site with a field and a playground, a swimming pool on site, and a tennis club next door. There is a separate reception building with its own outdoor area. In addition to the full national curriculum, French is taught from Year 5. A programme of enrichment activities runs for Year 5 and 6 pupils, including Latin, chess, philosophy, ICT and mini-bridge. Pupils have pen-pal links with children at an American school. After-school clubs offer French, aerobics, drama, netball, football, art and cricket. Teams from the school play regular competitive netball and football against local schools. Pupils visit local elderly people's homes at Harvest and Christmas, and there are links with a school in India as part of a charity fundraising venture. After-school care, until 5.30pm. Over-subscribed, with 1.1 applications per place. Investor in People status; DfES achievement award. Ethos: 'High expectations within a supportive school community and a caring Christian ethos'.
