Background:
Gordon's School was founded in 1886 as a boys' home, as the nation's memorial to Gordon of Khartoum. It is now a co-educational school catering for full-, weekly- and day-boarders, supported partly by the Gordon Foundation charitable trust. Situated in 50 acres of Surrey parkland, the school draws 60 per cent of its secondary pupils from the Surrey area and the rest from across the United Kingdom and abroad. It has its own heated indoor swimming pool and a 25-metre shooting range. Boarders are accommodated in recently-refurbished houses, each with its own individual family atmosphere. The school places emphasis on outdoor pursuits as a way of developing character, teamwork and confidence. New sixth form opened in 2004. Headteacher awarded CBE in 2005 for services to education. Over-subscribed, with more than five applications per place. Breakfast club, from 8am; after-school care, until 6pm. DfES achievement award (2000, 2001, 2002). Ethos: 'The school aims to develop personality, character and confidence in youngsters to enable them to cope fully with the modern world'.
